Opening the Door to Design: Career Conversations with Middle School Students

February 16, 2026

Design often begins with curiosity. During recent visits to local middle schools, that curiosity was unmistakable as students leaned into conversations about interior design—not just as a creative outlet, but as a thoughtful, professional practice shaped by education, experience, and intention.

Through a presentation of our design portfolio, students were invited behind the scenes of real projects, gaining insight into how ideas move from concept to finished space. The room quickly filled with energy and engagement, as students asked perceptive questions about design decisions, problem-solving, and the realities of working as a professional designer.

The discussion expanded beyond individual projects to explore the broader pathways into the design profession. We talked about the role of education and training, the range of career opportunities within the field, and the creative characteristics that often define successful designers: curiosity, visual thinking, collaboration, and attention to detail. Students were encouraged to see these qualities not just as interests, but as skills that can grow into meaningful, rewarding careers.

It was a privilege to share the depth and possibility of the design profession with such engaged young minds, and we’re honored to continue these conversations through future invitations from participating schools.
